Marlins Trade For Ozzie Gullien

With two games left in the 2011 season and Jack McKeon announcing his retirement, in an unusual trade the Florida Marlins picked up Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Gullien for two future minor league prospects. Guillen, who had one year left on his current contract, will not manage the final two games of the White Sox season before joining the Marlins organization. He had a previous stint for the world champion Florida Marlins in 2003 as a third base coach under McKeon. Guillen took over as manager for the Chicago White Sox in 2004 and stayed there for eight seasons. In 2005 he led the team to their first World Series title in 88 years. Gullien will become the first manager of the Miami Marlins when the team moves into their new ballpark next season. He won two American League Central Division titles in 2005 and 2008 and once played 13 seasons as shortstop with the White Sox. In the last 35 years, a major league manager has been traded for a player on two occasions. The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up Chuck Tanner from the Oakland A's for catcher Manny Sanguillen prior to the 1977 season. Two years later, Tanner would help the Pirates win the World Series along with Sangullien who was reacquired by the team. Prior to the 2003 season, Seattle Mariners manager Lou Pinella was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for outfielder Randy Winn.
