Penguins Edge Panthers
The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up their eighth win-in-a-row as they got by the Florida Panthers 2-1 in a shootout Friday night at Consol Energy Center. Neither team was able to score in the first period. The Panthers scored first midway through the second period when a Wojtek Wolski shot from the top left circle was wide of the net and rebound off the back half-wall. Tomas Fleischmann was to the right of the crease area and put in the puck. Pittsburgh tied the game early the third period as Jordan Staal scored from the low slot area. Pascal Dupuis had a goal disallowed at 8:53 when he tried to stuff the puck into the net from the left edge. Although the on-ice officials declared it a goal, a review from NHL hockey operations in Toronto reversed the call. Following no scoring for the rest of the third period and overtime, both teams would be involved in a shootout. James Neal and Evgeni Malkin scored on the their attempts for Pittsburgh while Florida missed on their two opportunities. The Panthers return to Sunrise on Sunday to begin a four-game homestand against the Carolina Hurricanes.
