The Miami Marlins finished their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays and were shut out on a combined two-hitter 3-0 Sunday at Tropicana Field. Rays starter Alex Cobb(3-3) went seven innings, gave up two hits and struck out a career-high ten batters. Josh Johnson(4-5) gave up eight hits and two runs in six innings pitched for Miami.
B.J. Upton hit a lead-off home run to left field on a 3-1 count in the first inning off Johnson for a 1-0 lead. The Rays added another run with a two-out rally in the sixth inning. Elliot Johnson walked and then stole second base. Drew Sutton followed with a single to center field and Johnson scored.
Randy Choate came in to relieve for the Marlins in the seventh inning. Tampa Bay welcomed him to the game as Upton got to second base on a fielding error by Gaby Sanchez. Carlos Pena popped out to the shortstop for one out. Upton then scored on a single by Ben Zobrist to left field to make it 3-0. The Marlins next face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Tuesday.
