The nationally ranked and undefeated William T. Dwyer Panthers were upset by the Atlantic Eagles 28-12 on Thursday night at Blum Stadium in a District 13-7A battle. Both teams are now tied for second place in the district as Atlantic owns the head-to-head tie breaker over Dwyer. It was the final regular season home game for the Panthers as they wore pink uniform jerseys in honor of breast cancer awareness month for the second consecutive week.
The game began 45 minutes late due to a weather delay caused by lightning. On Dwyer's first punt of the game, Brisly Estime returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown at 9:46 of the first quarter and an Atlantic 7-0 lead.
A bad punt by Atlantic on the final play of the first quarter gave Dwyer the ball at the Eagles 20-yard line. The Panthers scored on the first play of the second quarter as Alonso Smith rambled up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown at 11:52. The extra point was kicked wide left and Dwyer was down 7-6. It was the closest they would get to take the lead.
Another good kickoff return by Estime had the Eagles next possession begin at Dwyer's 40-yard line. He capped the five-play drive with a 24-yard reception from Thomas Owens at 8:34 to extend their lead to 14-6.
Johnnie Dixon responded with a 67-yard kickoff return down to the Eagles eight-yard line. Three plays later, Marcus Gaskin intercepted a pass from Clay Meister at the three-yard line and advanced it ten yards. Atlantic(3-1, 5-2) scored on their next drive as Aldy Enoicy caught a 12-yard pass in the end zone with 3:09 left in the first half for a 21-6 lead. The game was delayed for 45 minutes after the made extra point due to lightning approaching Rick Hubbard Field.
Dwyer(3-1, 6-1) was fired up following the delay as Smith blasted through with a 53-yard run on the first play of their next drive to the Eagles ten-yard line. They went four-and-out at the five-yard line as the Panthers were unable to score in the final minute of the second quarter and close the margin.
On the first play that Atlantic possessed the ball in the third quarter, Tevin Spells increased their lead to 28-6 on a 75-yard run down the sideline at 10:51. Fourteen seconds later, Dwyer came back following the kickoff on their first play from scrimmage as Smith ran 43 yards for a score to cut the deficit to 28-12.
