The Glades Central Raiders will receive a gift on Friday night as they host a Class 5A regional final against the Miami-Jackson Generals in Belle Glade. It was expected that if the Raiders made it to the regional final game they would play in Broward or Dade County because the tournament bracket is skewed to the south this year.
Jackson(7-4) finished as a runner-up in District 16-5A and had to win two playoff road games at Norland in Miami and American Heritage in Plantation to get to this point. The Generals won five of their first six games then lost the final three games of the regular season. They upset the American Heritage Patriots 39-23 and followed it with a 30-21 victory over the defending Class 5A champion Norland Vikings in the playoffs.
The Generals will play in their first regional final since 2006 and with a win would appear in the state semifinals for the first time since 2000. Quinton Flowers can be deceptive at quarterback as he can run and throw the ball at anytime. He will look for Vincent Hall as his favorite target along with Timothy Bellinger.
Glades Central(8-4) enter the game on a eight-game winning streak following a four-game losing streak to begin the regular season which was the one of the worst starts in school history. The Raiders will play in the regional final for the fourth consecutive year and were eliminated at home last year against eventual Class 5A champion Norland. The Muck Bowl team last won a state title at Class 3A in 2006.
The Raiders got home wins in the first two rounds of the playoffs over Rockledge 34-12 and Merritt Island 26-10. Will Likely will line up both as a running back and wide receiver and is dangerous when he gets the ball. David Bailey, Ranquavion Tarver, Jonathan Istache and Yener Ferdinard are expected to get receptions dowfield from T.J. Abrams.
