For the third consecutive month, Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM was the top sports format radio station in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region during the month of November. Other competitors 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM and 940 The Sports Animal WINZ-AM were able to narrow the margin.
WQAM had their ratings drop from a 1.1 to a 0.9 based on several factors. Steve Goldstein was let go by the station as early afternoon co-host with Adam Kuperstein after only nine months and replaced by Channing Crowder. It had an effect on their audience who have been used to listening to Goldstein on that station during his two stints from 1994-2004 and 2009-2012. In addition, the University of Miami Hurricanes football team was lackluster at the time and the Florida Panthers were in an NHL lockout.
WAXY regained second place and went up from a 0.6 to a 0.7 in November. It was strange that the station did not get a higher bump in the ratings with the start of the regular season for the Miami Heat and that there were no Miami Marlins games. It also increased as Eric Reed replaced Jason Jackson, who departed after eight months, as the early afternoon host and Mia Harris began her second stint at the station as a morning/midday sports anchor.
WINZ returned back to their regular spot in the region at third place as they slightly fell from a 0.7 to a 0.6 during the month. The Miami Dolphins have played better than what was anticipated for the team. The one-hour loss of their daytime signal in early November did have an effect.
