940 The Sports Animal WINZ-AM program director Ken Charles will transfer from Clear Channel Miami to Clear Channel Sacramento and become vice president of programming. He became program director of WINZ-AM and News Radio 610 WIOD-AM in early 2007 and replaced Peter Bolger. Prior to his move to Miami, Charles was regional vice president of Clear Channel Houston and program director for 790 ESPN Radio KBME-AM, News Radio 740 KTRH-AM, and Talk Radio 950 KPRC-AM.
Charles flipped WINZ from a liberal talk format to a sports talk format at the start of April 2009. The station had been ranked as the third highest rated sports format station in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region behind Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM and 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM for over three years. The only exception was recently in October 2012 as they finished in second place barely ahead of WAXY.
Miami Heat radio broadcasts were switched from WIOD to WINZ after the 2007-08 season. Clear Channel picked the radio rights for Miami Dolphins games as they signed a six-year contract prior to the 2010 season. The games would air on WBGG-FM Big 105.9 and 940 The Sports Animal. Miami Heat broadcasts left the station for 790 The Ticket in November 2010 when there was a same-day, same-time conflict with a Miami Dolphins broadcast.
Charles added the Jeff DeForrest Show from 640 Sports WMEN-AM in July 2010 and implemented the Finsiders Show with Jesse Agler during afternoon drive in August 2010. He brought in Larry Milian and Phil Dominic as a mid-afternoon show in January 2012. 940 The Sports Animal has used Fox Sports Radio for all other shifts at the station except for morning drive since April 2009
