Marlins Sign Placido Polanco

    The Miami Marlins have signed third baseman Placido Polanco to a one-year deal. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies for the last three seasons. He had a .257 batting average with two home runs and 19 runs batted in 90 games last year. He won two National League Eastern Division titles with the team in 2010 and 2011.
    Polanco, a two-time all-star player, won a gold glove at third base with Philadelphia in 2011. He played with the Detroit Tigers from 2005 until 2009 and was part of the American League champions in 2006. Polanco won two gold gloves as a second baseman with them in 2007 and 2009. He began his major league baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals and was with them for two playoff appearances from 1998 until 2002. Polanco was traded to the Phillies, his first stint with that team, in a five-player deal for Scott Rolen.
