There was a tie for the top sports format radio station in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region between 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM and Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM during the month of December. The last time two stations tied for the top spot was back in September.
WQAM had their three-month reign as the solo leader in the area stopped as they dropped from a 0.9 to a 0.7 in December. The station had no momentum from the University of Miami Hurricanes football team as they self-imposed a ban for the second straight season to compete in a bowl game at the end of the year. In addition, the audience has not taken to the midday block since Steve Goldstein was let go in October. The two shows with shaky numbers consist of Dan Sileo followed by Adam Kuperstein and Channing Crowder.
WAXY remained the same as they stayed at a 0.7 for the second consecutive month. The Miami Heat had their best two-month start in franchise history, however it was a general surprise that the station did not go up in the ratings. Eric Reed along with Ethan Skolnick has kept up the charge in the early afternoon shift since Jason Jackson left in October.
940 The Sports Animal WINZ-AM took the third spot for the second straight month as they went from a 0.6 to a 0.5. WINZ program director Ken Charles, who flipped the station to a sports format in April 2009, left the station in early December. Syndicated sports talk host Jim Rome completed his run at the end of the month and the Miami Dolphins were coming to the end of an average season. Numerous changes will occur at this station as of January and will have an impact on their ratings.
