Florida Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen has named defenseman Ed Jovanovski as the new captain of the team for the upcoming 2012-13 season. The Panthers have not had a captain since Bryan McCabe during the 2010-11 season. Center Stephen Weiss and defenseman Brian Campbell will be alternate captains for the club this season. Weiss, Campbell, Jovanovski and forward Tomas Kopecky were alternate captains for the Cats in 2011-12.
Jovanovski becomes the seventh captain in franchise history for the Florida Panthers. Previous Florida Panther captains include Brian Skrudland, Scott Mellanby, Paul Laus, Pavel Bure, Olli Jokinen and McCabe. Jovanovski began his second stint with Panthers when he signed as a free agent prior to the 2011-12 season.
He was the first overall pick at the 1994 NHL draft by the Florida Panthers. He debuted with the team in 1995-96 and was usually paired on defense with Gord Murphy. The Florida Panthers made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history that season. The Panthers were the Eastern Conference champions with series victories over the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. They lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Colorado Avalanche in four games.
Jovanovski was involved in a seven-player trade in January 1999 as he went to the Vancouver Canucks for Pavel Bure and would stay there through the 2005-06 season. He signed as a free agent and played for the Phoenix Coyotes from 2006-07 until 2010-11.
