The Chicago Bears have hired Marc Trestman as their new head coach on Wednesday. He will replace Lovie Smith, who led the team to an NFC title in 2006 and an appearance in Super Bowl 41. Trestman, a University of Miami grad, has bounced around with numerous coaching positions in the last 30 years.
He was recently the head coach for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League for five seasons from 2008 until 2012. Trestman led the team to two Grey Cup CFL championships in 2009 and 2010. He won four East Division titles and was the only head coach ever to lead Montreal to consecutive CFL titles. He was named the CFL coach of the year in 2009 and left the team with a 59-31 record.
Trestman began his football coaching career as a volunteer coach under head coach Howard Schnellenberger at the University of Miami in 1981. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 1983 where he developed Bernie Kosar and Vinnie Testaverde. The Hurricanes won the national championship in 1983 as they defeated the University of Nebraska at the Orange Bowl. He left The U after the 1984 season and entered the NFL.
He joined the Minnesota Vikings as a running backs coach from 1985 to 1986 and then joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a quarterbacks coach in 1987. He went to the Cleveland Browns and reunited with Bernie Kosar for two seasons. Trestman was the quarterbacks coach in 1988 and offensive coordinator in 1989 where they made the playoffs both times. He went back to Minnesota from 1990 until 1991 as their quarterbacks coach.
Trestman returned to coaching as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in 1995 and 1996. He made a one-year stop in 1997 with the Detroit Lions as the quarterbacks coach. He joined the Arizona Cardinals as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1998 until 2000.
The Oakland Raiders hired him as a quarterbacks coach in 2001 and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2002. The Raiders lost Super Bowl 37 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He left after the 2003 season and become a part of the Miami Dolphins coaching staff for 2004. He returned to college football as the offensive coordinator for North Carolina State in 2005 and 2006.
