The Miami Marlins were able to muster just two hits in their home opener as they fell to the Atlanta Braves 2-0 on Monday night at Marlins Park. Former Marlins Jeff Conine and Mike Lowell performed a relay throw prior to the start of the game as the first pitch.
Justin Upton began the fourth inning with a double to right field for Atlanta(6-1). He advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to right by Evan Gattis and then scored on an ground out by Dan Uggla to shortstop.
The Braves added another run in the top of the sixth as Upton blasted a one-out solo home run to left field off Marlins pitcher Kevin Slowey on a 1-0 count for his sixth homer this season.
Miami(1-6) had one last chance in the ninth inning against reliever Craig Kimbrel. With two outs and pinch-runner Chris Valaika on first, Rob Brantly singled to center and advanced Valaika to third. Adeiny Hechavarria came up to the plate as the go-ahead run, however he struck out to end the game.
Slowey dropped to 0-2 this season as he went seven innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm pitched seven scoreless innings, gave up only one hit, struck out seven and improved to 2-0.
