The Miami Marlins returned home on Tuesday night and fell to the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 at Marlins Park. The Fish have lost six of their last seven games and are now 5-12 at home this season.
Cincinnati(23-16) scored in the top of the first inning. Zack Cozart ripped a one-out double to right field then Joey Votto singled to center. Brandon Phillips knocked in Cozart on a base hit to left field.
Miami(11-28) evened up the game in the bottom of the first. Juan Pierre led off with a double to right field and advanced to third on a ground out by Placido Polanco. Pierre scored on a single by Derek Dietrich to left-center field off Homer Bailey.
The Reds responded with five runs during the second inning against Ricky Nolasco. With Ryan Hanigan on first and one out, Shin-Soo Choo was hit by a pitch and then Cozart singled to left and loaded the bases. Votto walked and Hanigan came in to score. Phillips was the second straight batter to walk as Choo crossed the plate. Xavier Paul cleared the bases with a three-run double into left field for a Cincinnati 6-1 lead.
The Marlins added another run in the seventh inning. Adeiny Hechavarria tripled to deep right-center field with one out. Rob Brantly followed with a sacrifice fly to right field for Hechavarria to score.
Nolasco went five innings, gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out five. His record fell to 2-5 this season. Bailey threw a complete game as he pitched all nine innings, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out ten Marlins. He improved his record to 2-3.
