It was a struggle for the Miami Marlins to stay in the game as they were shut out by the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 at Marlins Park on Wednesday night. The Fish have now lost seven of their last eight games and are 3-10 in the month of May.
The first inning was an outlook of things to come as Cincinnati(24-16) got the lead against Marlins starting pitcher Alex Sanabia. Shin-Soo Choo led off with a base hit to center field then Cesar Izturis walked. Two batters later, Brandon Phillips doubled into deep left-center field for Choo to score.
Choo blasted a one-out solo home run to left-center field on a 1-2 pitch for a Reds 2-0 lead. Izturis followed with a double to left field and then crossed the plate on a base hit by Joey Votto to left-center.
Miami(11-29) surrendered another run in the sixth inning. Choo picked up his second home run of the game with a two-out solo homer to right field on a 3-2 count.
Sanabia fell to 2-6 as he gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings. Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake went 6 2/3 innings, allowed no runs on nine hits and struck out six to raise his record to 3-2.
