Jacob Turner pitched a complete game as the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 7-1 at Marlins Park on Saturday. The Fish improved to 16-24 at home this season as they defeated the Padres for the first time in five meetings in 2013.
Miami(28-51) jumped out to a 3-0 lead during the first inning against Eric Stults. Justin Ruggiano led off with a base hit to left center then Ed Lucas had a single to center field. After Giancarlo Stanton struck out, Ozuna singled into deep right field as Ruggiano and Lucas scored on a throwing error by Alexi Amarista. Ozuna scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Placido Polanco.
The Marlins extended their margin to 6-0 in the fourth inning with three more runs. Polanco walked and advanced to third on a base hit to center by Derek Dietrich. Polanco scored on a single to left-center field by Adeiny Hechavarria as he went to second on the throw to the plate. Jeff Mathis knocked in Dietrich and Hechavarria on a base hit to center.
San Diego(40-41) broke the shutout in the fifth inning. Will Venable hit a lead-off triple to deep center field and he scored on a double by Nick Hundley into left field.
Giancarlo Stanton capped things off with a one-out solo homer to left-center field on a 1-0 pitch from Tim Stauffer in the seventh inning. It was his eighth home run of the season.
Turner, who improved to 2-0 in 2013, pitched all nine innings, gave up one run on seven hits and struck out seven batters. Stults fell to 6-6 as he allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
