The Miami Marlins tried to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games, but they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Miami(16-42) scored the first two runs of the game during the third inning off Kyle Kendrick. Juan Pierre had a one-out single to shallow center field and Ed Lucas got a walk. Derek Dietrich drove Pierre in on a single to right field. Marcell Ozuna followed with a base hit to shallow left field for Lucas to score.
Philadelphia(28-30) bounced back in the fifth inning and picked up three runs to take the lead. Tom Koehler surrendered a lead-off home run by Erik Kratz to left-center field on a 2-1 pitch. Two batters later, Kendrick tripled to deep center field and then scored on a single by Ben Revere to left field. Cesar Hernandez brought in Revere on ground out after he stole second and went to third on a throwing error.
The Phillies added four more runs in the sixth inning against Ryan Webb as Ryan Howard started with a double to deep center field. Domonic Brown smacked a two-run homer on a 2-2 pitch to right field and Delmon Young followed with a solo home run to left field on a 1-1 pitch. After Kratz struck out, Freddy Galvis tripled into deep right field. Kendrick grounded out to short as Galvis crossed the plate.
Koehler dropped to 0-4 this season as he gave up four earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Kendrick pitched a complete game as he went nine innings, allowed two runs on six hits and raised his record to 6-3.
