It was not close as it appeared in Game 5 as the San Antonio Spurs handed the Miami Heat a 114-104 loss on Sunday night at AT&T Center. The Spurs lead the best-of-seven series three games to two and can clinch their fifth NBA title on Tuesday night in Miami.
All five Spurs starters scored in double figures. Manu Ginobili got his first start this season and compiled a double-double with 24 points and 10 assists in 33 minutes played. Tim Duncan also added a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds in 38 minutes. Tony Parker had a team-high 26 points with five assists in 36 minutes while Kawhi Leonard got 16 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes. Danny Green, who had 24 points, set an NBA Finals record as he has made 25 three-point shots in the series. He surpassed Ray Allen who scored 22 three-point shots for the Boston Celtics in the 2007-08 NBA championship series.
Dwyane Wade nailed a double-double for the Heat as he had 25 points and 10 assists in 40 minutes. LeBron James knocked down 25 points with eight assists and six rebounds in 44 minutes. Allen led all reserves with 21 points in 30 minutes while Chris Bosh contributed 16 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes.
San Antonio had a 15-2 rally at the end of the opening quarter and were ahead 32-19 after one period. The Spurs extended their lead up to 17 points midway through the second quarter 47-30, but Miami was able to cut the margin down to five points late in the period. The Spurs led 61-52 as they entered halftime.
Miami scored the first eight points of the second half to pull within one point of the Spurs, however San Antonio held them off with a 12-1 edge at the end of the period and were up 87-75 after three quarters. The Spurs scored the first seven points of the final quarter as they stretched a 19-1 run between the two periods. The Heat came as close as eight points with 1:37 left, but San Antonio made the next two baskets and put the game away.
