The Miami Marlins stopped the hottest team in major league baseball with a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Marlins Park on Monday night. The Fish have won two straight games and are now 28-34 at home. The Dodgers lost two consecutive games for the first time since June 20 and June 21.
Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez raised his record to 9-5 as he pitched six innings, struck out eight and gave up one earned run on four hits. Hyun-Jin Ryu started for the Dodgers as he allowed three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings and dropped to 12-4.
Miami(48-75) picked up a two-out rally and got up to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Fernandez singled softly into center field and then scored on a double by Christian Yelich to deep left field. Donovan Solano drove him in on a base hit to right field.
Los Angeles(72-52) got consecutive hits by Juan Uribe and Mark Ellis to begin the fifth inning while Ryu reached first on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Carl Crawford beat out an infield double play for Uribe to score.
Both teams scored one run during the sixth inning. Uribe doubled to deep right with one out to score Ethier with two out for the Dodgers. Logan Morrison of the Marlins countered it with a one-out double into deep right field as Solano scored.
The Fish put up three additional runs as they extended their lead in the eighth inning to 6-2. Giancarlo Stanton crushed his 15th home run this season on a 1-0 pitch from Chris Withrow to center field with two out. J.P. Howell relieved for Withrow and the Marlins pounded him with three straight base hits. Morrison doubled to right field and scored on a single to left-center field by Ed Lucas. He would take second on a wild pitch and added another run on a base hit by Adeiny Hechavarria to center.
