The long six-month reign of 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM has ended as they tied with Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM for the top spot of sports format stations in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale region during July. The last time both stations were deadlock for the highest rated sports station was in December 2012.
790 The Ticket had their largest margin of victory last month since June 2012. They dropped from a 1.3 to a 0.9 in the month of July. After the Miami Heat captured their second straight title and third championship in franchise history on June 20, the station saw an erosion of their audience. The Marlins did show improvement on the field and had their best month of the season.
WQAM rose from a 0.8 to a 0.9 during the month of July without one game broadcast. They continued to grow with the momentum of John Renshaw during middays as he had no local Miami sports shows to compete against in his time slot. The announcement at the end of the ratings period that afternoon host Jorge Sedano will leave the station after one year in late August for ESPN Radio created a social buzz.
104.3 The Ticket WAXY-FM fell slightly from a 0.6 to 0.5 in the month of July. It was due for same reasons as their sister-station 790 The Ticket because there were no Miami Heat game broadcasts during the ratings period.
940 The Sports Animal got the same results as they have in five of the last six months as they remained flat at a 0.2 in July. It is expected that the station will get their usual bump in the ratings next month as the Miami Dolphins will be in training camp and play pre-season games.
