The Miami Marlins began their final three-game set of the 2013 regular season with a 3-2 victory over former Marlins manager Jim Leyland and the Detroit Tigers 3-2 at Marlins Park on Friday night. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria fired president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest prior to the game.
Tom Koehler got the win for the Fish and improved to 5-10 as he allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Marlins reliever Steve Cishek compiled his 34th save of the year. Tigers starting pitcher Jose Alvarez surrendered three runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings and fell to 1-5.
Miami(60-100) put up all of their three runs in the game during the third inning. The Marlins had the bases loaded with two out when Ricky Porcello came in to relieve for Alvarez. Giancarlo Stanton cleared the bases and connected with a three-run double into left field to score Koyie Hill, Placido Polanco and Christian Yelich.
In the fifth inning, Detroit(93-67) cut the margin down to 3-1. Austin Jackson ripped a two-out single into center field which brought in Alex Avila from third.
The Tigers got an additional run in the sixth inning. Former Marlin Miguel Cabrera led off with a base hit to right and Matt Tuiasosopo came into the game as a pinch-runner. After Don Kelly flew out to right, Jhonny Peralta drove in Tuiasosopo with a double to deep right-center field to make it 3-2.
