The Fort Lauderdale Strikers made their first appearance in the modern Soccer Bowl on Saturday night at Toyota Field and were defeated by the San Antonio Scorpions 2-1 for the NASL championship. Both clubs were vying for their first league title. The Strikers, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped, once played in the Soccer Bowl back in 1980 during the old North American Soccer League and lost to the New York Cosmos 3-0.
Neither team was unable to score during the first half. San Antonio came through with two goals in the middle of the second half. Rafael Castillo struck a bicycle kick during the 70th minute. Billy Forbes gave the Scorpions a two-goal lead on a breakaway in the 75th minute.
The Strikers responded quickly during the 79th minute to knocked the margin down to 2-1. Walter Ramirez pulled off a give-and-go with Mark Anderson and finished the play with a blast into the top half of the net.
