The Hallandale Chargers will challenge the American Heritage Patriots in a Class 5A regional semifinal on Friday night at Heritage Field in Plantation. They faced each other three weeks ago for the District 15-5A championship and the Patriots were victorious 38-15.
Hallandale(9-2) moved down in classification this year and finished as a district runner-up. They easily shut out Suncoast 42-0 in West Palm Beach during a regional quarterfinal last week. Their season ended last year with a close loss in a regional semifinal to the eventual FHSAA Class 6A state champions the Miami Central Rockets.
The Chargers come out in a spread offense and have a well-balanced attack. Quarterback Tyler Huntley can throw the ball anywhere on the field to wide receivers Chris Cotto, Josh Hammond, Korell Evans and Juwan Hardy. Hallandale has two running backs to carry the ball with Zach Moss and Jordan Roberts.
American Heritage(9-1) is the defending two-time FHSAA Class 5A state champions and have dominated their own district for several years. They blanked Fort Pierce Westwood 43-0 last week in a regional quarterfinal.
The Patriots have three options to run the ball from the backfield which includes quarterback Jason Brown along with running backs Kyshaun Bryan and Khalil Herbert. Brown will try to connect with wide receivers Brandon Johnson, Nick Eubanks and Laress Nelson for receptions.
