The annual Soul Bowl game between the Blanche Ely Tigers and the Dillard Panthers will be held on Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Both teams finished as district runner-ups and will be on the road next Friday in the FHSAA playoffs.
This rivalry between both schools is one of the biggest rivalries in Broward County high school football. Blanche Ely has won five of the last six Soul Bowls including a 5O-O wipeout two years ago.
A problem for the Tigers is that they have won only one game this season. It was a district win against the Fort Lauderdale Flying L's which was not decided until the final minute of the game when they got some insurance and returned an interception for a touchdown from lOO yards away. They lost the district title game at home against the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders last week.
Blanche Ely are led on offense by quarterback Zachery Purdue, running back Arthur Forrest and wide receiver Thomas Geddis. They will travel to Palm Beach Gardens next Friday and challenge the Dwyer Panthers at Blum Stadium in a regional quarterfinal game.
Dillard finished in second place for their district following a do-or-die home victory last week over the Boynton Beach Tigers. They face Carol City next week at Traz Powell Stadium in the first round of the playoffs.
The Panthers play a spread offense and quarterback Anthony "Mo" Hasan will pass the ball all over the field. His most likely targets are expected to be wide receivers Jordan Merrell and Bryce Oliver.
