The Miami Heat announced on Tuesday that the club will retire the No. 32 worn by center Shaquille O'Neal. He will be the third uniform number that the franchise will display at the top of the rafters at American Airlines Arena. O'Neal will join the previous retired numbers of No. 33 Alonzo Mourning and No. 10 Tim Hardaway.
O'Neal was acquired by the Miami Heat from the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004 for Lamar Odam, Caron Butler, Brian Grant and a 2006 first-round draft pick. At his introduction ceremony on Biscayne Boulevard in front of a packed crowd, he promised Miami that he would bring an NBA title.
He accomplished it in his second season with Miami in 2005-06 as he teamed up with Dwyane Wade, Mourning, Udonis Haslem and Gary Payton. He was traded by the Heat to the Phoenix Suns in February 2008 for Shawn Marion.
O'Neal began his NBA career with the Orlando Magic and led them to an Eastern Conference championship back in 1995. He joined the Lakes in 1997 and helped them win three consecutive NBA titles from 2000 until 2002.
