The Florida Panthers pulled even two games each in their best-of-seven first round series as they beat the New York Islanders 2-1 in Game 4 at Barclays Center on Wednesday night. Both clubs will face each other for Game 5 in Sunrise on Friday.
After a scoreless first period, a Jonathan Huberdeau backhand goal on a breakaway with 9:15 left in the second period was disallowed by officials. The Panthers had an Aaron Ekblad goal waved off in the second period of Game 3.
Florida would score on the power play with 4:42 remaining in the period. Ekblad fired a slapshot from the right point and Jaromir Jagr then attempted two shots from the right of the crease. He got the second rebound, went to behind the Islanders net and backhanded the puck. Teddy Purcell scored on a one-time forehand shot from the low left circle past Thomas Greiss. It was the first point for Jagr in the series and his 200th career playoff point on the play as he became only the fifth player in NHL history to accomplish that feat.
New York got a great opportunity when they converted on a five-on-third power play with 15.3 second to go. Brock Nelson made a cross-ice pass from the left point to Ryan Pulock on the right point. He connected a pass to John Tavares in the low right circle and he roofed in a wrist shot by Roberto Luongo for his third goal of the playoffs.
The Panthers regained the lead 2-1 at 9:25 of the third period. Derek MacKenzie backhanded the puck from the left wing to the top of the zone. Alex Petrovic delayed then delivered a snap shot from the top right circle for his first goal of the series.
