The St. Andrews Scots hosted the LaSalle Royal Lions on Friday at Don Jones Memorial Field in Boca Raton and lost 10-7. It was a contest between two schools in separate divisions of the Southeastern Football Conference.
Following a Royal Lions punt, things started horribly for St. Andrews(2-2). Scots quarterback Jason Otis fumbled the ball away on a run during their first play on offense at their own 48-yard line, however LaSalle(3-1) was unable to score.
The Scots special teams unit also had a problem in the final minute of the first quarter deep in their own end. Following a high snap over the head of punter Harrison Newhouse into the end zone, he attempted to throw the ball to an illegal person downfield on the five-yard line.
The Royal Lions failed to capitalize on the situation with three plays inside the ten-yard line after the penalty was marked off. They had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by kicker Alexander Garcia at 11:54 of the second quarter.
St. Andrews finally got a first down 17 minutes into the game when wide receiver Evan Loesel jumped up and caught a 30-yard pass on the right sideline from Otis at the LaSalle 45-yard line. Six plays later, running back Gadiel Cartagena went around the left end for a touchdown run from three yards out to give the Scots a 7-3 lead with 5:09 left in the first half.
It would remain an offensive struggle for both teams for the rest of the game. LaSalle scored a touchdown in the second half to go up 10-7 for the victory.
