The Jesuit Tigers have to make a long trip from Tampa to Plantation and face the American Heritage Patriots on Friday night at Heritage Field in a Class 5A state semifinal. Both schools enter this contest undefeated.
American Heritage(12-0) have captured two of the last three FHSAA Class 5A state titles with victories in 2013 and 2014. They went on the road last week and stopped the defending Class 5A state champions Bishop Moore 20-7 in the regional final. The Pats beat Fort Pierce Westwood 55-12 in a regional quarterfinal and Cardinal Gibbons 10-7 in a regional semifinal. They have averaged 32 points in their last 10 games.
Patriots quarterback Jason Brown can occasionally run with the ball out of the option and pass it to wide receivers Laress Nelson, Miles Jones, Dontavius Butler, Darnell Fleury and Josh Alexander. Jones could also be used in the backfield along with running backs Abraham Alce and Jordan Johnson on rushes.
Jesuit(12-0) will play their first road game of the playoffs following three blowout victories at home. The Tigers pounded Gibbs 64-12 in a regional quarterfinal, topped Jefferson 42-20 in a regional semifinal and stomped Immokalee 56-29 in the regional final last week. They have scored 585 points in 12 games this season which averages to 48 points per game.
The Tigers will put more emphasis on running the ball than passing with quarterback Daniel Boon calling the signals. Running back Malik Davis should get most of the carries with Matthew Pittman and Leonard Parker added to the rushing threat. Travell Harris and Larry Hodges are their primary wide receivers.
