The Southridge Spartans overcame a 10-point deficit and defeated the Dr. Phillips Panthers 14-10 in the FHSAA Class 8A state championship on Saturday night at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The Spartans captured their first state title since 1993.
Dr. Phillips(12-3) compiled all of their points during the second quarter. Sterling Stockwell kicked a 44-yard field goal at the 10:49 mark for a 3-0 lead. Running back Emare Hogan later scored a on a five-yard touchdown with 48 seconds left in the second and the Panthers had a 10-point margin at the end of the first half.
Southridge(12-2) pulled off an incredible comeback in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Michael Cox threw a eight-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jordan Dillard with 8:26 to go. Their attempted extra point was blocked and they were down 10-6.
The Spartans would take their first lead of the game with 4:20 remaining when Cox connected a 72-yard throw to wide receiver Mark Pope for a touchdown. They made the two-point conversion as Antwan Collier passed to Dillard for a 14-10 lead.
