The 2017 NFL Draft finished in Philadelphia on Saturday with picks from the fourth round to the seventh round. More players with a South Florida connection were selected.
The Chicago Bears choose safety Eddie Jackson in the fourth round with the 112th overall pick. Jackson played high school football with the Boyd Anderson Cobras. He moved on to the University of Alabama where the Crimson Tide captured the CFP National Championship in 2015. He led the team that year with six interceptions.
It took one pick later for somebody from the University of Miami to be selected as the Los Angeles Chargers got safety Rayshawn Jenkins. He played four seasons for the Hurricanes and compiled two interceptions, seven passes broken up along with 76 tackles in his senior year.
Several local guys were taken during the fifth round. Anthony Walker Jr. was picked by the Indianapolis Colts 161st overall. He played linebacker for Monsignor Pace and Northwestern University.
Wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie was selected with the 172nd overall pick by the Denver Broncos. He helped the American Heritage Patriots win their first state title in 2013 as they captured the FHSAA Class 5A championship. McKenzie went to play college football for the University of Georgia.
The Minnesota Vikings decided on offensive guard Danny Isidora of the University of Miami with the 180th pick. He did play high school football with the Cypress Bay Lightning.
There were no local selections in the sixth round, however two former Broward County standouts were named in the seventh round. Cypress Bay had one-time running back Matthew Dayes picked 252nd by the Cleveland Browns. Dayes later was with the North Carolina State Wolfpack in college.
University of Miami wide receiver Stacy Coley went to the Minnesota Vikings as the 219th overall pick. Coley was first noticed while with the Northeast Hurricanes in high school.
