Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edinson Volquez pitched a no-hitter as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 at Marlins Park on Saturday. It was the sixth no-hitter by the Marlins in franchise history. Volquez threw the first no-hitter of the 2017 Major League Baseball season.
The last time the Marlins had a no-hitter was the final game of the 2013 regular season when the Detroit Tigers were hitless against Henderson Alvarez. Anibal Sanchez once pitched a no-hitter against the same Diamondbacks club on September 6, 2006.
Miami(23-31), who have won seven of their last ten games, got out to a 1-0 margin in the fourth inning. Justin Bour knocked in Giancarlo Stanton with a base hit to shallow left field.
The Marlins added two more insurance runs during the bottom of the eighth. Stanton led off with a walk and Christian Yelich singled to left field. Marcell Ozuna drove in Stanton with a single into center for a 2-0 lead. Bour then doubled to right field which scored Yelich.
Arizona(34-24) had one final opportunity in the ninth inning to break up the no-hitter. Volquez struck out pinch-hitter Chris Owings to end the game.
