The Chaminade-Madonna Lions travel to Traz Powell Stadium and face the Miami Central Rockets on Thursday night. It is the opening game of the regular season for both schools as they begin with a new playoff points system instituted by the FHSAA.
Chaminade-Madonna made it to the FHSAA Class 3A state championship game in Orlando last year and lost to Trinity Christian Academy. This season the Lions have to fight it out for one of four playoff spots available in Section 4 against competition that includes Oxbridge Academy, American Heritage and Cardinal Newman. Chaminade-Madonna returns some speed on their offense with Auburn University commit Shaun Shivers at running back and wide receiver Xavier Williams.
After four consecutive FHSAA Class 6A state championships, Miami Central finished in third place in District 16 and failed to make the postseason in 2016. This season has the playoff points system and it is possible that the Rockets, Class 6A state champion Carol City and Miami Northwestern could all qualify to make the playoffs. Miami Central is led on offense by running back James Cook and he explode into open space anytime.
