The Deerfield Beach Bucks travel to Miami and challenge the Carol City Chiefs on Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium. Both schools look to repeat their winning ways from last season with the implementation of a new playoff points system.
Deerfield Beach won District 9 last year and made it all the way to the state semifinal game where they lost at home to eventual FHSAA Class 8A state champion Southridge. The Bucks return the bulk of their defense from last season. Running backs Jakari Norwood and Jaylon Knighton remain two of the offensive skill players that continues on the squad from 2016.
Carol City went through the hard way to capture the FHSAA Class 6A state title over Lake Gibson last year. It was their first state championship since 2003 and their fifth overall. They finished in second place in the extremely tough District 16 and had to win all their playoff games on the road which included a regional semifinal victory over district rival Miami Northwestern. The backfield remains intact for the Chiefs with quarterback Marlon Smith along with running backs Camron Davis and Nay'quan Wright.
