Giancarlo Stanton smashed his 50th home run of the season as the Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 at Marlins Park on Sunday. It was a three-game sweep for the Fish on their short home stand. They have won 13 of their last 16 games.
Stanton has been on a hectic home run pace since early July. He has hit 29 homers in his last 36 games, 17 homers in his last 23 games and 12 homers in his last 17. Stanton now has 17 home runs in August which tied Willie Mays in 1965 and Sammy Sosa in 2001 with the National League record.
Miami(66-63) scored twice in the third inning. Stanton knocked in Dee Gordon with a double into the right-field corner. Stanton later scored on a wild pitch with Christian Yelich at-bat to make it 2-0.
In the fifth inning, San Diego(57-73) tied the game up 2-2. Clayton Richard ripped a two-run homer to right field on the first pitch. Dusty Coleman also scored on that long drive.
The bottom of the eighth inning brought a major four-run rally for the Marlins. Stanton smashed a two-run shot to straight center field on a 2-1 pitch for the milestone home run with Gordon scoring in front of him on the play.
Yelich followed with a triple and went home on a throwing error by Carlos Asuaje. Derek Dietrich then golfed a solo home run down the right-field line on a 1-2 pitch for his eighth homer of the year.
