District 16 in Class 5A looks like it will be decided as the American Heritage Patriots take on the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs at The Furnace in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night. Both schools have the top two spots in the district and are projected to make the FHSAA playoffs.
American Heritage(4-0, 1-0) have outscored their four opponents 128-23 this season. They defeated out-of-state schools Bishop Sullivan Catholic along with Liberty and followed that with victories over Chaminade-Madonna and Stranahan.
The Patriots bring a strong backfield of running backs Jordan Johnson, Miles Jones and Tyler Jones. Quarterback Cam Smith has plenty of targets with wide receivers Anthony Schwartz, Joshua Alexander and Tyler March. Defensive back Patrick Surtain Jr. highlights their secondary.
Cardinal Gibbons(5-0, 2-0) had 11 days off since their previous game for this anticipated contest. The Chiefs, who have outscored their opponents 174-12 this year, upset defending Class 8A state champion Southridge on the road in the season opener. They piled up wins over American Heritage-Delray, Douglas, Coconut Creek and Jackson.
Nik Scalzo leads the Chiefs offense as quarterback and looks to find wide receivers Carlos Sandy, Brandon Lee, Levontae Decius and Dimon Stewart on passes. They have many options to carry the ball with running backs Vincent Davis, Jordan Riggins and Tajae Davis.
