It is a rematch of District 16 rivals as the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs go across Broward County to Plantation and face the American Heritage Patriots at Heritage Field in a Class 5A regional final. Both teams played against each other earlier this year in Fort Lauderdale and the Patriots won 23-19.
Cardinal Gibbons(11-1) have played in the same district with the Patriots going back to 2009 and been second best to them. The Chiefs have compiled four shutouts this season. They stopped Jones in Orlando 43-30 in a regional quarterfinal and last week got by Rockledge 19-14 in a regional semifinal. The Chiefs have outscored their opponents 419-97 this season as they averaged 34 points for and eight points points against per game.
Quarterback Nik Scalzo has slew of running backs to hand the ball off to that includes Vincent Davis, Jordan Riggins and Tajae Davis. Scalzo will attempt to connect passes to wide receivers Carlos Sandy, Brandon Lee, Levontae Decius and Dimon Stewart. Linebacker Donnell Bennett III is at the helm of the Cardinal Gibbons defense.
American Heritage(10-0) are the defending FHSAA Class 5A state champions and have won the state title three of the last four years. The Patriots currently have a 24-game winning streak and not lost a game since the 2015 playoffs. They blasted Merritt Island 52-0 in a regional quarterfinal and beat Bishop Moore 56-27 in a regional semifinal last week. They have outscored their opponents 377-78 this year and averaged 37 points for with seven points against per game.
The Patriots have several options in the backfield with running backs Miles Jones, Jordan Johnson and Tyler Jones along with quarterback Cam Smith. Wide receivers Anthony Schwartz, Joshua Alexander and Tyler March intent to get open for passes from Smith.
