The defending FHSAA Class 6A champion Carol City Chiefs start their playoff run as they face the Dillard Panthers at Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium on Friday night in a regional quarterfinal. The Chiefs will have to take the same route to the championship game in Orlando as last year and try to win four consecutive road games.
Carol City(6-3) lost three games this season which included district defeats to Miami Northwestern and Miami Central along with Deerfield Beach. The Chiefs, who compiled four straight shutouts during the middle of the season, did have decisive victories over Norland, Southridge and Booker T. Washington. They outscored their opponents 275-55 and allowed only six points per game this season.
The Chiefs have Marlon Smith in the quarterback position and a backup with wide receiver Legend Moore if necessary. Running backs Camron Davis and Nay'quan Wright are the two options the team has in the backfield. Smith intends to find wide receivers Phenol Williams and Treyunn Lane for completions.
Dillard(6-4) won the Soul Bowl last week over Blanche Ely for the second straight year. The Panthers lost their first three games of the regular season, however they bounced back as they won six of their last seven contests. They suffered losses to Booker T. Washington, Western, Deerfield Beach and Cardinal Gibbons.
The Panthers passing attack has Moise Francois at quarterback and he will look for wide receivers Bryce Oliver, Joshua Freeman, Elijah Black and Dandre Jones. Running back Keyondre White is the main threat from the backfield to carry the ball.
