The Carolina Panthers stopped the Miami Dolphins 45-21 on Monday night at Bank of America Stadium. It was the third consecutive week that the Dolphins played a prime-time game.
Carolina(7-3) got the first points of the game on a 40-yard field goal by Graham Gano at 1:55 of the first quarter. The Panthers extended their lead to 10-0 at the 7:05 mark of the second. Running back Christian McCaffrey rushed through the right side and scored from four yards away.
Miami(4-5) reached the end zone late in the second quarter. Quarterback Jay Cutler forwarded a shovel pass to tight end Julius Thomas for a two-yard touchdown with 2:12 left in the first half and the Fins were down 10-7.
The Panthers had enough time to drive down the field and scored with 24 second to go in the first half. Quarterback Cam Newton found tight end Ed Dickson with a seven-yard touchdown pass.
The third quarter belonged to Carolina as they outscored them 21-7 and were up 38-14. Newton connected a 28-yard pass to wide receivers Devin Funchess for a score at 11:57. They made it 31-14 on their next possession when running back Cameron Artis-Payne dashed to the left side and scored from 12 yards out at the 7:22 mark.
The Fins stopped the streak of 21 unanswered points with 5:58 remaining in the third. Running back Kenyan Drake broke through with a 66-yard touchdown run down the left side.
The momentum ended for the Dolphins as Carolina punched it into the end zone less than three minutes later. Netwon threw a short two-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey with 3:14 left in the third quarter.
They added on to the lead in the fourth quarter. Funchess caught his second touchdown pass from Newton from 32 yards away at 8:29 to make it 45-14.
The Dolphins responded back with their own touchdown with 4:05 remaining. Cutler rolled out to his right and fired a nine-yard strike to wide receiver Jarvis Landry in the middle of the end zone.
