The Miami Northwestern Bulls got back to the top of the mountain as they defeated the Armwood Hawks 21-16 for the Class 6A state championship at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Friday night. Miami Northwestern won their first state title since they captured back-to-back Class 6A state championships in 2006 and 2007.
Armwood(14-1) moved out to a 2-0 lead at 7:16 of the first quarter. The Bulls had a bad snap on a punt and the ball ended up out of the end zone for a safety.
The Hawks got a break on their next possession as a 30-yard field goal by Adrian Olivio was waved off when the Bulls were called for roughing the kicker. Three plays later, quarterback Devin Black threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Warren Thompson and they had a 10-0 lead with 4:38 left in the first.
Miami Northwestern(12-2) was in the red zone midway through the second quarter. They turned the ball over on downs at the Hawks 12-yard line with 6:48 left in the first half.
It was deja vu six plays later as Armwood had a bad snap on a punt which turned into a safety for the Bulls and they trailed 9-2 with 4:13 left in the second. Running back Kiaryn Davis returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to the Hawks 31-yard line. Three plays later, running back Davonne Kendrick raced in from 12 yard away to tie the contest 9-9 with 3:09 remaining in the quarter.
In the third quarter, the Bulls finally took their first lead of the game at the 3:41 mark on a four-play, 61-yard drive. Quarterback Chatarius Atwell Jr. scored on a 51-yard touchdown run to give them a 15-9 lead.
Miami Northwestern struck again on the first play of their next possession with 1:10 left in the third. Atwell connected a 46-yard pass to Davis for a score and a 21-9 margin.
Armwood did not go away as they scored at 6:46 of the fourth quarter on a five-play, 68-yard drive. Quarterback Devin Black carried the ball around the right end and into the end zone from 11 yards out to cut the deficit down to 21-16.
