The Florida Panthers returned from the five-day Christmas break and handled the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at BB&T Center on Thursday night. The Panthers compiled a season-high, four-game winning streak with the victory while the Flyers now have lost three straight games.
Philadelphia(15-14-8) committed two penalties in the first 1:15 of the contest, survived a 5-on-3 power play for 1:21 and allowed just two shots.
Florida (16-16-5) eventually scored at 6:43 of the opening frame. Nick Bjugstad fed a pass from the neutral zone to Jared McCann. He skated into the Flyers zone and scored on a wrist shot from the high slot past Brian Elliott for his sixth tally of the year.
In the second period, the Panthers made it 2-0 on a shorthanded goal at the 9:19 mark. Colton Sceviour carried the puck down the right-wing boards. He centered it to the middle where Derek MacKenzie put in a one-time slap shot from the slot area.
The Cats extended the game to a three-goal margin with 6:08 left in the second. Bjugstad was on the right wing and made a short pass to Jonathan Huberdeau at the right-circle dot. He ripped a snap shot into the top portion of the cage for his 13th goal of the season.
The Flyers broke the shutout with 7:32 remaining in the third period and cut the lead down to 3-1. Travis Konecny came into the Panthers zone and found Scott Laughton at the top right circle. He sailed a wrist shot over the left shoulder of James Reimer for his sixth goal of the campaign.
Philadelphia pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and it worked. Claude Giroux had the puck in the left corner and moved it to Shayne Gostisbehere above the top left circle. His slap shot was deflected in by Sean Couturier in the crease area with 2:02 left in the third.
