The Florida Panthers continued their five-game road trip with a 2-1 defeat to the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center on Thursday night. It was the second time in five days that these non-conference opponents faced each other.
It was not until the second period when one of the teams scored. Colorado(15-14-2) made it 1-0 at 3:15 when Tyson Barrie passed across the high slot for Nathan MacKinnon to take a one-time slap shot past James Reimer.
Florida(12-15-5) battled back and picked up a shorthanded goal to tie the contest 1-1 at the 10:27 mark. Jared McCann stripped the puck from Samuel Girard behind the Avalanche net and fed a pass to Aleksander Barkov in the crease area for him to shoot a one-timer by Semyon Varlamov. Barkov now leads the National Hockey League with four shorthanded goals this year.
In the third period, the Avs were able to regain the lead 2-1 at 6:44. Mark Barberio zipped a pass through the neutral zone to MacKinnon on the left wing. He skated into the Panthers zone, through the left circle and placed a snap shot inside the near post for his second tally of the game and 13rd goal of the season.
