Former Florida Marlins pitcher Trevor Hoffman was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America on Wednesday. Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero and Jim Thome were also elected in and all of them will be inducted in July.
Hoffman began his Major League Baseball career with the Marlins and spent several months with the club in 1993 after he was selected from the Cincinnati Reds in the 1992 expansion draft. He was traded to the San Diego Padres on June 24, 1993 for Gary Sheffield in a five-player deal. Hoffman helped San Diego win the National League title in 1998.
He was with the Padres from 1993 until 2008 and played his last two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoffman finished second all-time in Major League Baseball history with 601 saves. Only Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees compiled more saves than him with 652.
Hoffman joins several former players in the Baseball Hall of Fame who had played for the Marlins franchise. They include Andre Dawson, Mike Piazza, Pudge Rodriguez and Tim Raines.
