The Florida Panthers picked up a last-second goal to barely beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Saturday night at BB&T Center. The Panthers extended their winning streak to three games with the victory.
Florida(22-22-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 3:17 mark of the first period. Aaron Ekblad snapped a shot from the high slot by Petr Mrazek. for his 10th goal of the year. Jonathan Huberdeau and Keith Yandle were credited with assists on the play.
Detroit(21-22-8) evened the contest at 8:51 of the second period. Frans Nielsen had the puck on the right wing and made a centering pass. Daniel DeKeyser fired a slap shot from the high slot by Harri Sateri.
The Panthers pulled ahead 2-1 with 6:22 left in the second. Nick Bjugstad connected a long pass from his own zone to Evgenii Dadonov in the neutral zone. He sent a lead pass to Aleksander Barkov and he put in a wrist shot from inside the right circle for his 16th goal of the season.
In the third period, the Red Wings tied it 2-2 at the three-minute mark. Nielsen sent a snap shot from the top of the zone on net. DeKeyser came in for the rebound as the puck went off his right skate in the blue paint and into the cage.
The Cats got the game-winning goal with just 7.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Keith Yandle slapped a shot from the right wing which was saved. Huberdeau was on the doorstep and poked the puck in for his 18th tally of the campaign.
