The Miami Marlins played the final game of a six-game home stand and were defeated by the Boston Red Sox 4-2 in 13 innings on Tuesday night at Marlins Park. The Fish have a day off and visit Philadelphia for their first road game of the regular season against the Phillies on Thursday.
Andrew Benintendi began the first inning for Boston(5-1) with a one-out walk against Marlins starting pitcher Jose Urena and then stole second. After Hanley Ramirez flew out to deep left field, J.D. Martinez singled to center which scored Benintendi.
In the fourth inning, Miami(2-4) got to tie the contest 1-1. Brian Anderson singled to right field with two out against Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale. Justin Bour came up and knocked in Anderson with a double to right-center field.
The game would go into extra innings. The Red Sox broke the tie during the top of the 11th inning as they faced Odrisamer Despaigne. Eduardo Nunez was able to double into deep left field and then cross the plate on a base hit by Benintendi to right field.
The Marlins answered back in the bottom of the 11th with a two-out rally against Matt Barnes. Anderson and Bour both walked to get on base. Cameron Maybin doubled to left field and Anderson scored, however Bour was tagged out at home when trying to get the game-winning run.
It would be decided in the 13th inning for Boston. Mookie Betts lined a base hit into center field with one out and Benintendi was intentionally walked. Ramirez made his former team pay as he ripped a double to left-center for Betts and Benintendi and gave the Red Sox a two-run margin.
