The defending FHSAA Class 6A state champion Miami Northwestern Bulls went up to Delray Beach on Tuesday night and tied the Class 8A state finalist Atlantic Eagles 8-8 at War Eagle Stadium in a spring football game. Both schools faced each other at the same site in a spring football game last year with the Bulls victorious 19-7.
A pregame ceremony was held for former Eagles defensive back Marc Allan Derac, who passed away several weeks ago from a dirt bike accident. Atlantic will retire the number 23 jersey in his honor to open up the 2018 high school football season in August.
Northwestern jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Isaiah Velez threw a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Rayquan Berry in the back of the end zone for a touchdown and added a two-point conversion pass for an eight-point margin.
Atlantic was able to get the momentum late in the third quarter. After they had a drive stopped at the Bulls 16-yard line with four minutes to go, Northwestern got the ball and things went wrong. Eagles cornerback Lincoln Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards for a score with 1:50 left in the third. They converted a pass for a two-point conversion and tied the contest 8-8.
The Eagles had one more scoring opportunity midway through the fourth quarter. Kicker Brian Litang had the distance and missed a 47-yard field goal wide left with 6:56 remaining.
