The Miami Central Rockets visited Delray Beach and pounded the Atlantic Eagles 39-7 in a preseason kickoff classic at Atlantic Stadium on Thursday night. The Eagles come off a FHSAA Class 8A state championship game appearance while the Rockets were eliminated in a regional semifinal against eventual Class 6A state champion Miami Northwestern last year.
Miami Central scored early at the 8:11 mark in the first quarter. Quarterback Maurice Underwood found wide receiver Anthony Colonel in the front of the end zone from 30 yards away.
Atlantic got their only lead in the contest 28 seconds into the second quarter. Running back Antonio Gonzalez got through the line and breezed by the secondary on a 75-yard touchdown run to make it 7-6.
The Rockets answered back less than one minute later at 10:44. Running back Lexington Joseph went around the left end and scored from 15 yards out for a 12-7 lead. Joseph scored again rushing for one yard on a wildcat formation through the left side of the line with16 seconds remaining in the first half.
The third quarter started well for Miami Central as they ended up in the end zone on their second play on offense at 7:40. Underwood connected a 79-yard pass to Colonel on the right hash marks and increased their lead to 26-7.
In the fourth quarter, Rockets running back Kejon Owens added another score at the 7:19 mark as he sprinted down the left sideline from 19 yards away. Miami Central put in a one-yard touchdown run with 51.6 seconds left in game.
