Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov was named the new captain of the club. He replaces Derek MacKenzie who was the captain of the Panthers for the past two seasons.
Barkov becomes the 10th captain in franchise history which goes back 25 years. Other previous captains of the team includes Brian Skudland, Scott Mellanby, Paul Laus, Pavel Bure, Olli Jokinen, Bryan McCabe, Ed Jovanovski, Willie Mitchell and MacKenzie.
Barkov enters his fifth season with the Florida Panthers after being drafted second overall in 2013. He finished with 27 goals and 51 assists in 79 games last season and was third for the Lady Byng Trophy. Barkov has scored 100 goals and 149 assists in 331 games with Floirda.
