The Miami Hurricanes easily handled the North Carolina Tar Heels 47-10 at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday night. The Canes are looking for their second straight Coastal Division title.
North Carolina(1-3, 1-1) was able to generate a 22-yard field goal by Freeman Jones to go up 3-0 at 8:08 of the first quarter.
The rest of the quarter would be controlled by the Hurricanes. Running back DeeJay Dallas scored on a four-yard touchdown run to the left side at the 6:06 mark. They struck again with 4:41 left in the first when Jonathan Garvin returned a fumble nine yards into the end zone.
UNC capped off the opening quarter on a score with 2:18 to go. Quarterback Chazz Surratt rushed through the middle on a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 14-10.
Miami(4-1, 1-0) posted 19 points in the second quarter and had a huge 23-point margin. Bubba Baxa nailed a 35-yard field goal at 12:22. On the Tar Heels next possession, a Surratt pass was intercepted by Joe Jackson and he returned it 42 yards to the end zone with 9:09 remaining in the quarter.
The Canes continued their momentum with 2:36 left as N'Kosi Perry connected a five-yard pass to wide receiver Darrell Langham in the back of the end zone. Baxa added a 28-yard field goal in the final four seconds of the first half which gave Miami a 33-10 lead.
After no scoring in the third, the Hurricanes scored on the first play of the fourth quarter. Romeo Finley picked off a pass by Surratt and returned it for a 83-yard touchdown. Miami finished the scoring on a one-yard rushing touchdown by running back Trayone Gray at the 4:09 mark.
