The Wellington Wolverines were able to edge the Park Vista Cobras 14-8 at GL Homes Stadium on Friday night. The game between both schools turned out to be more about defense than offense.
Wellington(2-1) scored on their first play during their first possession. Quarterback Blake Kendall Jr. connected a 78-yard pass up the middle to running back Judien Durant to go up 7-0 just 23 seconds into the contest.
Park Vista(1-2) would get their only points of the first half on the first play of the second quarter. Defensive back Frantz Derival blocked a punt and the Wolverines recovered the loose ball in their own end zone for a safety.
The Cobras got their first lead at 10:55 of the fourth quarter. Quarterback Tyler Thomas threw to the left side and found wide receiver Aydin Henningham in the front of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown strike to give Park Vista a 8-7 lead.
The Wolverines regained the lead with 5:27 left in the fourth. Durant dashed to the left side of the line and sprinted down the left sideline for an 82-yard touchdown run.
Park Vista had four tries to get the ball in the end zone from the Wellington 10-yard line during the final minute, however they were unable to score.
