The FHSAA playoffs had their second round games throughout South Florida this past weekend. 28 South Florida high schools participated in the regional semifinals.
Class 8A in Region 3 saw two shutouts in their contests. #1 Deerfield Beach downed #5 Plantation 23-0 in a Broward County clash. #3 Palm Beach Central had no trouble and blasted #7 Western 38-0. Deerfield Beach will host Palm Beach Central next week in the regional final.
Region 4 got #1 Columbus to blank #5 Miami Palmetto 42-0 and #6 South Dade upend #2 Miami Southridge 21-13. South Dade travels to Columbus in the third round.
Class 7A in Region 4 had the two top seeds get easy victories over district rivals. #1 St. Thomas Aquinas with no problems with #5 Fort Lauderdale 51-0. #2 Dwyer pulled away from #6 Palm Beach Lakes 55-27. Dwyer heads to Fort Lauderdale next week and faces St. Thomas Aquinas for the fourth time in the postseason since 2013.
Class 6A in Region 4 saw a clash of District 16 teams as #5 Miami Central edged #1 Carol City 30-21. Defending Class 6A state champion #6 Miami Northwestern went on the road to defeat #2 Heritage 31-19. It will be a battle between two schools in the region without a district title as Miami Central takes on Miami Northwestern next week.
Region 4 of Class 5A noticed #2 Cardinal Gibbons getting by #3 Jones 30-27 while #5 American Heritage took care of #1 Rockledge 31-14. Two district foes will have their playoff rematch from last year when Cardinal Gibbons host American Heritage next week in a regional final.
Class 4A in Region 4 got an upset as #3 Glades Central surprised #2 Booker T. Washington 18-16. #1 University School defeated #5 Gulliver Prep 40-13. Glades Central goes to Broward County and challenges University School in a playoff rematch from last year and in addition it will be their fourth meeting in the last two seasons.
Region 4 in Class 3A saw the defending Class 3A state champion #1 Chaminade-Madonna dominate #5 Palmer Trinity 62-0. #3 American Heritage knocked off #2 Benjamin 23-19 in a battle between Palm Beach County teams. It will be a playoff rematch as Chaminade-Madonna hosts American Heritage next week.
Region 2 had #1 Kings Academy outlast #5 Holy Trinity 16-7. They will stay at home and face #2 The First Academy in the third round.
Class 2A in Region 4 saw #2 Glades Day get smoked by #3 Neumann 55-14. The defending Class 2A state champion #5 Champagnat Catholic got by #1 Moore Haven 24-16 and will take on Neumann next week in the third round.
The only South Florida high school in Class 1A was victorious. #2 Pahokee defeated #6 Wildwood 34-13 and they will now drive to #1 Hawthorne in the next round.
