The Miami Central Rockets head up I-95 and face the Dillard Panthers at Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium in a Class 6A regional quarterfinal on Friday night. Dillard has lost at home in a first round playoff game against a District 16 opponent for three straight years.
Miami Central(8-2) finished second in District 16 behind Carol City and are the top at-large seed in Region 4. The Rockets have racked up victories this season over playoff teams Cardinal Gibbons, Booker T. Washington, St. Thomas Aquinas, Norland and Miami Northwestern. They lost two games this year by a combined 11 points.
Rockets quarterback Maurice Underwood controls their offense with a dangerous passing attack. They have two choices to go with in the backfield as running backs Lexington Joseph and Kejon Owens will get their rushing opportunities. Underwood has several targets with wide receivers Anthony Colonel. Anthony Frederick, Shamar Zaragoza, Jaylin Young and Geovanii Ribalta.
Dillard(8-2) won the District 15 title and last week topped local rival Blanche Ely 42-6 in the Soul Bowl. They have won seven straight games and have outscored their last four opponents 173-9. The Panthers did fall in two of their first three regular season games to Booker T. Washington and Cardinal Gibbons.
The Panthers have quarterback Tyrese McConn at the helm as he can run the ball from the backfield and also pass. Running back Leonard Schoutz will get the bulk of carries on offense. McConn looks to find wide receivers Elijah Black, Sky Louis, Devaughn Mortimer and Jarvis Lewis down the field for receptions.
